East China's Xiamen hosted the BRICS Summit in 2017. The event facilitated numerous collaborations among member countries, including vibrant people-to-people exchanges. Our reporter Sun Tianyuan visits a local hospital to explore how its visiting scholar program has fostered global cooperation among cardiovascular experts.
Xiamen is renowned for its stunning sea views, but for cardiologists, it is also a hub of knowledge. International trainees are gaining valuable hands-on experience at Xiamen Cardiovascular Hospital.
Antonio Simao from Brazil has spent the past six months refining his skills through a visiting scholar program known as "Heart Sapling."
ANTONIO SIMAO, Visiting Scholar from Brazil "This program is very important for us, because we can exchange knowledge, see new technologies, new procedures. We have been here learning interventions in heart, similar to heart surgeries but with minimal injuries. We can benefit this kind of patient."
The Xiamen University-affiliated hospital launched the program in 2022. Initially, it was focused on training cardiovascular specialists among BRICS nations. As China strengthens its commitment to the Global Development Initiative, the program extended its reach. A trainee from Myanmar says she feels at home in Xiamen, thanks to the friendships she has built at work.
TOE WAI WAI NAING, Visiting Scholar from Myanmar "They're very warm and friendly. And I can learn a lot from each and every one of the persons. The technology is so advanced. My knowledge and skills are getting improved day by day. That's why I want to extend my study period for another six months after one year."
The 'Heart Sapling' program has already welcomed 13 trainees from seven countries to Xiamen, with more participants expected in the future.
WANG YAN, President, Xiamen Cardiovascular Hospital of Xiamen University "Over the next three years, we will offer 50 fellows from countries in the group of the friends of the GDI. We hope to train more cardiovascular specialists. And I hope that we can play a key role in their home countries in the future."
SUN TIANYUAN, Xiamen, Fujian Province "This program – with its people to people exchange, or as cardiologists call it, 'heart to heart' – is aimed at helping more doctors learn and apply their expertise to global healthcare. Sun Tianyuan, CGTN, Xiamen, Fujian Province."
